You are a member of The Institute of Quarrying Australia or one of its affiliated Institutes.

You need to be a member of The Institute to apply for QMCS recognition (or, CP status), but you could have gained your qualifications and experience prior to becoming a member and still apply.

Do you need help deciding whether or not to apply for Certified Practicing status?

Basically, the system is for those who are or have been supervisors/managers and wish to have that recognized and to retain their recognition.

Are you applying for Managers’ or Supervisors’ status?  Do you need help deciding which one?  Basically,

  • Certified Practicing Quarry Supervisor (CPQS)
    This level is intended for the individual who is responsible for the day-to-day operational supervision of an extractive industry site.  In some cases a supervisor may run the whole site, while in other cases they may only be responsible for certain aspects of the operation. You can apply for an upgrade in your CP status at a later date.

  • Certified Practicing Quarry Manager (CPQM)
    This level is intended for the person who is responsible for the on-going operational management of a larger or more complex site or group of sites.

Do you have the necessary qualifications to apply for Certified Practicing status? You need to have both qualifications and experience (see next section for experience requirements).

Are you asking the CP Board to accept your prior experience (‘grandfather status’)?

Anyone seeking CPQS (Supervisor or manager of small-scale site) status must hold a Certificate IV in Extractive Industries Operations (MNQ40103) or another qualification recognised by the CP Board as equivalent to that qualification – or better. 
They must also, at the time of application, be currently competent in the unit HLTFA1A - Apply Basic First Aid (or an equivalent approved unit of competency) issued by a Registered Training Organisation.

Anyone seeking CPQM (Manager of larger site) status must hold a Diploma of Extractive Industries Management (MNQ50103) or another qualification recognised by the CP Board as equivalent to that qualification - or better.  They must also, within the last ten years, have been assessed as competent in the unit HLTFA1A - Apply Basic First Aid (or an equivalent approved unit of competency) issued by a Registered Training Organisation.

Do you have the necessary experience to apply for Certified Practicing status?

Anyone seeking to become a CPQS must show evidence that, in the five (5) years prior to applying, they have a minimum of thirty-six (36) months practical experience made up of twelve (12) months hands-on operational work, at least twenty-four (24) months supervisory experience, which may include six (6) months involved in related project work.

Anyone seeking to become a CPQM must show evidence that in the ten (10) years prior to applying, they have a minimum of thirty-six (36) months practical and management experience in quarrying, mining or similar industry circumstances.

Are you applying for certification in relation to sites that use explosives?

Anyone seeking to become Certified Practicing Quarry Supervisors or Managers for sites involving the use of explosives must hold a shotfirers / users licence.

check box Do you have a Curriculum Vitae (CV) or can you prepare a work history to attach to your application?  You need to supply enough information to establish that you have worked competently in the general area of practice and in the grade applied for, and showing that you meet the qualifications and experience requirements for your level of certification.  If you rely on your referees to supply your work history, their letters will need to be detailed sufficiently to show that you have the necessary experience and qualifications. or
